Land in Ontario is usually sold in blocks of 100 acres, and the soil is
predominantly clay loam. Ballybright Farm is located one road north of
the village of Bright, and around 20 minutes north of the town of Woodstock.
Land in this area is usually ploughed, but minimum tillage techniques are also
common for some crop rotations. This year we planted 50 acres of winter
wheat, 85 acres of new alfalfa, with a 45 acre area being already in crop.
The remainder of the farm is planted in corn (maize) for silage and grain
production.

The land is usually ploughed in November, after slurry application, and is
allowed to lie fallow over the winter period. Then when ground conditions
improve in spring, the land is cultivated and seed beds prepared. The
optimum time to plant corn is during the first three weeks of May, with
spring seeding also best for alfalfa. |
